Valve Charecterstics and sizing
Assuming the media is water or a similar media (glycol/water mix), a butterfly valve can be properly sized by following these steps: 1. CV calculation: Using the following formula and the information required above, you could calculate the flow coefficient (CV) of the control valve.
CV = GPM ?P
Whereas : GPM = The maximum flow requirement; P= The maximum pressure drop ( 5 psi)
Example
If the line size is 6” and the required flow is 600 GPM with a maximum pressure drop of 5 psi, the square root of 5 is equal to 2.236. When divided into 500, the required Cv for this application is: 268.336. If you look at the Cv chart, this value lies between 262 and 647 at 90° opening. Choose the higher value 647 and you will need a 4” valve.

Actuators Options :
Handle : Manually operated valves can be provided with spring loaded lever typehandles for easy operation. Indexing Scale indicating % of valve opening can beprovided on request. Grooved handle arrangement to lock valve at different positions are also available. Geared Rotary hand wheels are standard for higher sizes.
